Which revolution in East Germany included the fall of the Berlin Wall?

The fall of the Berlin Wall took place during East Germany’s Peaceful Revolution. This nonviolent movement, also known as Die Wende, challenged the Socialist Unity Party’s one-party rule and demanded freedom of movement, democratic elections, and political reform.

The revolution grew through church-based peace groups, civil-rights organizations, and mass demonstrations, especially the Monday demonstrations in Leipzig. On 9 October 1989, roughly 70,000 people marched in Leipzig without violence, despite fears that security forces might use force. The government’s failure to suppress the protest encouraged larger demonstrations across the country.

The Wall opened on 9 November after Günter Schabowski mistakenly suggested that new travel regulations took effect immediately. The resulting crowds forced border guards to open the checkpoints. The Peaceful Revolution therefore names the wider movement, while the fall of the Wall was its most famous breakthrough. The Velvet Revolution, by contrast, refers to the simultaneous nonviolent transition in Czechoslovakia.
