The West Berlin district reached by crossing the Bösebrücke from Bornholmer Straße was Wedding. The crossing connected East Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg district with Wedding on the western side.
Bornholmer Straße was one of the Berlin Wall’s official border crossings. On the evening of 9 November 1989, East German official Günter Schabowski announced new travel rules and, when questioned, suggested they were effective immediately. Crowds gathered at the crossing, even though the guards had not received clear instructions to open it.
The barriers were eventually lifted late that night, allowing thousands of East Berliners to cross the Bösebrücke into West Berlin. This made Bornholmer Straße one of the most iconic sites associated with the Wall’s opening. The bridge itself crossed railway tracks along the border between the two halves of the city.
A geographical wrinkle can cause confusion: Wedding was a West Berlin district at the time, while today it is an Ortsteil within the Mitte borough. Prenzlauer Berg is now part of Pankow, but in 1989 it was an East Berlin district. Thus “Wedding” is the historically correct answer, not a modern borough name.
