Doc Hudson is the retired racer honored as the Fabulous Hudson Hornet in Pixar’s Cars.
Doc is the physician and judge of Radiator Springs, but the film gradually reveals that he was once a celebrated Piston Cup champion. His racing identity was the Fabulous Hudson Hornet, a name based on the real Hudson Hornet automobile and its competition history.
Doc’s career ended after a serious crash and the loss of public attention. He becomes skeptical of racing stars, especially Lightning McQueen, but eventually agrees to help train the young driver. His experience teaches Lightning that racing requires more than speed.
The character is voiced by Paul Newman in Cars and is associated with racing number 51. He should not be confused with The King, another legendary champion, or Chick Hicks, who is a contemporary rival in the first film.
