Wingstop began as a chicken-wing concept in Garland, Texas, in 1994.
The founders built the brand around cooked-to-order wings, fries, and a range of sauces and seasonings. Its aviation-themed design was inspired by the 1930s and the era of early commercial flight, giving the restaurants a distinctive identity.
Unlike traditional fried-chicken chains built around large bone-in pieces, Wingstop emphasizes wings and flavor choices. Customers commonly select a sauce or dry rub, making the menu more customizable than a single-seasoning format.
The company expanded through franchising and later grew far beyond its Texas beginnings. The 1994 origin is sometimes confused with the founding dates of other wing brands, including Buffalo Wild Wings, which began in Ohio in 1982.
