Which reptile is known for its ability to run on water?

The story behind the answer

The basilisk lizard is the reptile famous for its ability to run on water. Basilisks are lizards of the genus Basiliscus, native to tropical regions of Mexico, Central America, and northern South America.

They usually run bipedally on their hind legs, often fleeing a predator. Their long toes and fringed flaps increase the surface area of each foot, while the rapid leg movement creates air pockets and pushes against the water before the surface closes.

A basilisk can travel across the surface only for a limited distance. Typical figures are about 1.5 metres per second for roughly 4.5 metres before it loses momentum, drops onto all fours, and begins swimming. Juveniles are especially capable because their lower body mass makes staying above the surface easier.

The nickname “Jesus Christ lizard” refers to the biblical story of walking on water. Basillisks are not the only lizards with this ability: sailfin lizards and some anoles can also skim across water, but basilisks are the best-known example.
