What is the largest living species of lizard?

The story behind the answer

The largest living species of lizard is the Komodo dragon. Scientifically named Varanus komodoensis, it is a giant monitor lizard native to several Indonesian islands, including Komodo, Rinca and Flores.

Adult males can reach about 3 metres in total length and weigh more than 70 kilograms. Komodo dragons are apex predators, eating deer, wild pigs, water buffalo and carrion. Their powerful jaws, serrated teeth and venom glands help them subdue large prey.

A common mix-up is the extinct megalania, or Varanus priscus, which was larger than modern Komodo dragons but does not qualify as living. The Asian water monitor and Nile monitor are also among the world’s largest lizards, but neither surpasses the Komodo dragon as a species.
