Cosimo Rosselli created The Last Supper scene on the Sistine Chapel’s north wall.

Rosselli’s fresco presents Jesus and the apostles at the meal before the Crucifixion. It belongs to the New Testament sequence on the north wall, which faces scenes from the life of Moses. The composition uses the traditional long table arrangement associated with Renaissance depictions of the Last Supper.

The painting was made during the early 1480s, when Pope Sixtus IV sponsored a major decorative campaign for the chapel. Rosselli was one of the artists invited from Florence and central Italy to contribute alongside Perugino, Botticelli and Ghirlandaio.

The fresco is sometimes overshadowed by Leonardo da Vinci’s far more famous Last Supper in Milan. Those are separate works by different artists; the Sistine Chapel version is attributed to Cosimo Rosselli and forms part of a larger biblical program.
