Which Renaissance author wrote The Book of the Courtier, published in 1528?

The story behind the answer

Baldassare Castiglione wrote The Book of the Courtier, published in 1528. Written as an imagined conversation at the court of Urbino, the book describes the education, manners, conversation, and cultural abilities expected of an ideal courtier.

The work presents courtly behavior through a series of discussions rather than as a simple list of rules. Its famous concept of sprezzatura describes performing difficult actions with apparent ease and without visible effort. The ideal courtier was also expected to understand literature, music, art, languages, and social diplomacy.

Castiglione served at several Italian and European courts and drew on his experience of aristocratic life. The book became influential across Europe through translation and helped shape later ideas of civility and court culture. It is not the same work as Machiavelli’s The Prince: Castiglione focuses on social and cultural conduct, while Machiavelli analyzes political power and statecraft.
