R.E.M.’s album released in 2001 was Reveal.

Reveal was issued by Warner Bros. Records in May 2001 and became R.E.M.’s 12th studio album. It followed Up, the band’s first album after drummer Bill Berry’s departure, and showed the remaining trio—Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, and Mike Mills—moving toward a brighter, more melodic sound. Pat McCarthy co-produced the record with the band.

The album was recorded in several locations, including Athens, Georgia; Vancouver; Miami; and Dublin. Its songs included “Imitation of Life,” “All the Way to Reno (You’re Gonna Be a Star),” and “I’ll Take the Rain.” “Imitation of Life” became one of the album’s best-known tracks, supported by a visually unusual video built from a looping, zooming image.

Reveal is sometimes confused with Up because both came after Berry left the group. They are separate releases: Up came out in 1998, while Reveal arrived three years later. Around the Sun, another tempting option, was not released until 2004; Accelerate followed in 2008.
