Which religion did Genghis Khan personally follow?

The story behind the answer

Genghis Khan personally followed Tengrism, the traditional spiritual system of the Mongolian and Central Asian steppe. Tengrism centered on Tengri, the eternal sky, and also involved reverence for earth, nature, ancestors, and powerful spirits.

Genghis Khan presented his authority as supported by Eternal Heaven. This belief helped frame his conquests as part of a larger sacred order, while Mongol ritual specialists and shamans played important roles in royal ceremonies and political life.

Tengrism was not a rigid, centralized religion with one scripture or a single priesthood. Its practices varied among Turkic and Mongolic peoples, and historians sometimes describe Genghis Khan’s faith more broadly as Mongolian shamanism. In a general trivia context, however, Tengrism is the standard answer.

He was also known for religious tolerance. His empire included Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Taoists, and other communities, and Mongol rulers often protected religious leaders. That tolerance should not be confused with Genghis Khan personally converting to one of those religions.
