Which region is explored in the Pokémon Gold and Silver games?

The story behind the answer

Pokémon Gold and Silver explore the Johto region.

Released for the Game Boy Color in Japan in 1999, Gold and Silver are the second main-series Pokémon games. Johto is the setting where players begin their journey, receive a starter Pokémon from Professor Elm, challenge regional Gym Leaders, and pursue the Pokémon League.

Johto is located next to Kanto, the region from the first-generation games. After completing the main Johto adventure, players can travel through Kanto, making Gold and Silver unusual among the main games for including two full regions in one journey.

The games introduced 100 new Pokémon, bringing the National Pokédex total from 151 to 251. They also added features such as Pokémon breeding, held items, a day-and-night cycle, and the first appearances of the legendary Pokémon Ho-Oh and Lugia. These additions made Gold and Silver a major expansion of the original formula.
