The culprit is Dark Matter, an evil force that possesses King Dedede and attempts to conquer Dream Land. Kirby travels across the islands to restore the bridges and stop the invasion.

Dark Matter's debut is especially notable because it established a recurring threat rather than a one-game villain. In the climactic battle, it first appears in a masked swordsman form before revealing its more abstract true form.
