Which record label signed The Jackson 5 in 1968?
Answer
Motown
Answer
Motown
Motown signed The Jackson 5 in 1968.
The Gary, Indiana group had already built a reputation through local performances and talent competitions when Motown founder Berry Gordy brought them to the label. The signing placed the brothers in the company of major Detroit soul artists and gave them access to Motown’s songwriting, production and recording system.
The group’s first Motown single, “I Want You Back,” was released in 1969 and became a major success. It reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 in early 1970, making the Jackson brothers one of the label’s most important new acts.
A common mix-up is confusing Motown with Epic Records. The Jackson 5 recorded for Motown during their breakthrough years, but the group later moved to Epic in 1975 and became known as The Jacksons. That later label change followed a dispute over Motown’s control of the group’s name.
