Which real car model inspired Pixar's character Doc Hudson?

The story behind the answer

Pixar's character Doc Hudson was inspired by the real Hudson Hornet.

The Hudson Hornet was an American automobile produced by Hudson from 1951 to 1954. Its “step-down” design placed the passenger compartment lower within the body, giving the car a distinctive appearance and a low center of gravity that helped it perform well in stock-car racing.

In Cars, Doc Hudson is the retired Piston Cup champion known as the Fabulous Hudson Hornet. His racing history mirrors the real car's motorsport reputation, especially its success in early 1950s NASCAR competition. The fictional Doc wears racing number 51.

The character was voiced by Paul Newman, whose calm performance contrasts with Doc's initially guarded personality. Pixar's design is not an exact museum reconstruction: it adapts the Hudson Hornet's shape and racing identity for an animated character. The Hudson Hornet is therefore more specific than simply answering “a classic American car.”
