MF DOOM’s album Madvillainy was a collaboration with producer Madlib. The project was released under the duo name Madvillain, combining DOOM’s masked, densely rhymed performances with Madlib’s collage-like production.
Released by Stones Throw Records on March 23, 2004, Madvillainy was recorded between 2002 and 2004. Madlib produced nearly all of the instrumentals, often using obscure jazz, soul, and funk samples. He created many beats during a trip to Brazil with a portable turntable, tape deck, and Boss SP-303 sampler. DOOM supplied the vocals and also helped produce the opening track, “The Illest Villains.”
The other options are associated with different parts of hip-hop history but are not the rapper on this album. Quasimoto is one of Madlib’s own alter egos, while Del tha Funkee Homosapien and Ghostface Killah had separate careers and collaborations. Madvillainy is often praised for its experimental structure, short tracks, humor, and unusually loose but intricate songwriting.
