Tech N9ne founded Strange Music with Travis O’Guin in 1999.
The independent record label was established in Kansas City, Missouri, and became the main home for Tech N9ne’s releases. O’Guin contributed business and label management expertise, while Tech N9ne built the artistic identity through rapid flows, theatrical delivery, and technically demanding performances.
Strange Music became known for its independent touring and direct connection with fans. Its roster later included artists such as ¡Mayday!, Krizz Kaliko, and Rittz, although membership changed over time.
The label’s name is linked to Tech N9ne’s stage identity, which itself references the TEC-9 semi-automatic pistol and the idea of technical lyrical speed. Strange Music is frequently discussed as an example of a rap company that built substantial reach without beginning as a major-label imprint.
