Which rainforest mammal is known for its slow movement and hanging upside down?

The story behind the answer

The rainforest mammal known for slow movement and hanging upside down is the sloth.

Sloths are tree-dwelling mammals native to the tropical forests of Central and South America. Their powerful claws let them grip branches while spending much of their lives suspended beneath them. Moving slowly helps conserve energy because their leafy diet provides relatively little usable nutrition.

There are seven living sloth species in two groups: three-toed sloths and two-toed sloths. Despite the names, every sloth has three toes on each hind foot; the distinction refers to the number of digits on the forelimbs. Sloths are also related to anteaters and armadillos, not monkeys or koalas.

Their fur can support symbiotic green algae, giving the coat a greenish cast that helps camouflage them among leaves. A common misconception is that sloths are incapable swimmers: although awkward on land, they can swim when necessary.
