Which continent is the only one without any rainforest?

The story behind the answer

Which continent is the only one without any rainforest? Antarctica is the only continent without any present-day rainforest.

Rainforests require sustained warmth, abundant moisture, and a growing season long enough to support dense tree cover. Antarctica is instead the coldest, driest, and windiest continent, with most of its 14.2 million square kilometres covered by a vast ice sheet. Its interior is a polar desert, not a forest environment.

The distinction is about modern geography. Antarctica once had forests, including temperate rainforest ecosystems during the Cretaceous, when the continent was part of the warmer supercontinent Gondwana. Continental drift and the development of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current later isolated the continent and helped drive its long-term cooling.

Australia, Asia, Africa, North America, South America, and Europe all contain rainforest environments, though they differ in climate and type. Antarctica does support limited mosses, lichens, algae, and two native flowering plants on ice-free areas, but none forms a rainforest.
