Which railway station in Tibet is the world’s highest, standing at about 5,068 metres above sea level?

The story behind the answer

Tanggula railway station in Tibet is the world’s highest railway station, standing at about 5,068 metres above sea level.

The station lies on the Qinghai–Tibet Railway near Tanggula Pass, close to the boundary between the Tibet Autonomous Region and Qinghai province. It was built as part of the line linking Xining with Lhasa and opened with the railway’s Lhasa extension in 2006.

Tanggula is an unstaffed station and is not a normal urban transport hub. Its extreme elevation means the surrounding environment has low oxygen levels, intense cold and long periods of snow and ice. Passenger trains crossing the route use oxygen-related precautions for these conditions.

The station is often confused with Tanggula Pass, the railway’s highest point, and with nearby Amdo station. The pass is higher than the station, while Amdo is a different stop on the same railway.
