Which railway station in New York City contains the world’s largest underground train terminal by number of platforms?

The story behind the answer

Grand Central Terminal in New York City contains the world’s largest underground train terminal by number of platforms.

The terminal has 44 platforms serving 67 tracks, arranged on two underground levels. It opened in 1913 after the New York Central Railroad electrified its approach lines and removed the smoke-producing steam trains from the terminal area.

Grand Central’s Beaux-Arts architecture includes its famous Main Concourse, ceiling mural and four-faced clock. The terminal serves Metro-North Railroad commuter trains rather than Amtrak intercity services, which use nearby Pennsylvania Station.

Grand Central Terminal is often mistakenly called Grand Central Station. “Grand Central Station” was the name of an earlier facility on the site, while the present building’s official name is Grand Central Terminal. The distinction matters because the complex includes terminal buildings, tracks and an extensive underground concourse.
