Which railway carries the Bernina Express over the Bernina Pass in Switzerland?
Answer
Rhaetian Railway
Answer
Rhaetian Railway
The Rhaetian Railway carries the Bernina Express over the Bernina Pass in Switzerland.
The Bernina Railway forms part of the Rhaetian Railway network and connects St. Moritz with Tirano in northern Italy. It crosses the Alps without a rack system, using adhesion traction on steep gradients.
The route reaches about 2,253 metres above sea level at Ospizio Bernina, making it one of Europe’s highest adhesion railways. Its bridges, tunnels and mountain landscapes helped earn the Albula and Bernina lines UNESCO World Heritage status in 2008.
The Bernina Express is sometimes confused with the Glacier Express. Both involve the Rhaetian Railway, but the Bernina Express runs toward Tirano, while the Glacier Express links Zermatt and St. Moritz.
