Which railway bridge is the world’s highest railway bridge?

The story behind the answer

The Chenab Rail Bridge is the world’s highest railway bridge.

The steel arch bridge crosses the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir, India. Its deck stands about 359 metres above the river, making it higher than the Eiffel Tower. The bridge forms part of the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link.

Construction was challenging because the site lies in a mountainous region exposed to strong winds, earthquakes and difficult access. Engineers used a large steel arch to support the railway deck across the deep valley.

The bridge was completed in 2022 and became a landmark of Indian railway construction. It is sometimes confused with the world’s highest bridge of any type, a separate category that can include road bridges and different measurements.
