Which Quran chapter contains the verses prescribing Ramadan fasting?

The story behind the answer

Al-Baqarah contains the Quranic verses prescribing Ramadan fasting.

The relevant passage is Quran 2:183–185, found in Al-Baqarah, the second and longest chapter of the Quran. These verses describe fasting as an obligation for believers, identify Ramadan as the month in which the Quran was sent down, and mention concessions for illness and travel.

Al-Baqarah means “The Cow,” referring to a narrative in the chapter. Its 286 verses cover worship, law, ethics, community life, and stories of earlier peoples. The fasting passage is therefore part of a much broader chapter rather than a separate chapter devoted only to Ramadan.

The answer is sometimes confused with Al-Qadr, the 97th chapter, because Al-Qadr discusses the Night of Power associated with Ramadan. Al-Qadr names that night, but the principal legal verses about fasting are in Al-Baqarah.
