Which Quebec event often falls on Canada Day because many leases expire?

The story behind the answer

The Quebec event that often falls on Canada Day because many leases expire is Moving Day.

In Quebec, July 1 is associated with a mass annual change of residences known as Moving Day. Many residential leases traditionally run from July 1 to June 30, so tenants who leave one home and begin another often move on the same date.

The custom developed from older Quebec rental practices and became especially entrenched in Montreal and other urban areas. Although landlords and tenants can agree to different lease dates, the July 1 pattern remains widespread, creating a seasonal rush for moving trucks, elevators, storage units and rental housing.

Moving Day is not the same as Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, Quebec’s national holiday, which is celebrated on June 24. It is also unrelated to Labour Day and Civic Holiday, which occur later in the summer. Canada Day coincides with the moving tradition because both fall on July 1.
