Which Quebec city neighbours Ottawa in Canada's National Capital Region?

The story behind the answer

The Quebec city that neighbours Ottawa in Canada's National Capital Region is Gatineau.

Gatineau sits on the north bank of the Ottawa River, directly across from Ottawa, Ontario. Together, the two cities form the core of Ottawa–Gatineau, a bilingual metropolitan area divided between Quebec and Ontario. The river is the provincial boundary in this part of Canada, making Gatineau Ottawa's cross-river neighbour.

The modern city of Gatineau was created in 2002 through the amalgamation of several municipalities, including Hull, Aylmer, Gatineau, Buckingham and Masson-Angers. Hull was the area's historic urban centre and was founded in 1800 by Philemon Wright. The name Gatineau comes from the Gatineau River, named for French explorer Nicolas Gatineau.

A common mix-up is treating the National Capital Region as a separate province or municipality. It is a federal designation covering Ottawa, Gatineau and surrounding communities; it is not its own political jurisdiction. The region also differs in size from the broader Ottawa–Gatineau census metropolitan area.
