The Qing-era Chinese painting manual commonly called the Mustard Seed Garden Manual is Jieziyuan Huazhuan.

Jieziyuan Huazhuan, whose title is often translated as the Manual of the Mustard Seed Garden, is a Chinese painting primer first published in Nanjing in 1679. It presents techniques, compositional models, and graded examples for painters, especially in the literati landscape tradition.

The manual is arranged around subjects such as landscape elements, trees, rocks, mountains, and figures. Later volumes expanded its coverage to flowers, birds, and other painting themes. Its woodblock illustrations helped transmit brush methods and visual conventions to artists who might not have had direct access to a master.

The book is sometimes mistaken for a single artist’s album. It is better understood as a compiled instructional work, shaped by several contributors and based partly on earlier painting traditions. Its influence extended well beyond the Qing period, including into modern Chinese painting and Japanese artistic education.
