Which punk zine was founded in 1982 by Tim Yohannan?
Answer
Maximum Rocknroll
Answer
Maximum Rocknroll
The punk zine founded by Tim Yohannan in 1982 was Maximum Rocknroll.
Usually abbreviated MRR, Maximum Rocknroll began as a newsprint booklet included with Not So Quiet on the Western Front, a Northern California punk compilation released by Alternative Tentacles. Tim Yohannan helped turn that starting point into one of the most influential publications in the international punk underground.
The zine published interviews, reviews, scene reports, political commentary, letters, and coverage of independent records and bands. It initially concentrated on California and North American punk, then expanded its outlook to scenes across Europe, Latin America, and elsewhere. Before the internet, its mail-based networks helped connect musicians, labels, promoters, and fans across national borders.
A frequent mix-up is treating Maximum Rocknroll as simply a conventional music magazine. Its not-for-profit, community-oriented approach and strong DIY politics were central to its identity, and its influence could be controversial because of its firm opinions about punk authenticity and politics. The publication ended its print run in 2019 after 432 issues, continuing online afterward.
