Which punk band was fronted by Jello Biafra?

The story behind the answer

Which punk band was fronted by Jello Biafra? The answer is Dead Kennedys. Biafra, born Eric Reed Boucher, co-founded the San Francisco punk band in 1978 and served as its lead vocalist and primary lyricist during its original run. His sharply satirical songs attacked political corruption, consumerism and authoritarianism.

Dead Kennedys paired Biafra's theatrical vocals with fast, tightly arranged hardcore punk. Guitarist East Bay Ray, bassist Klaus Flouride and drummer Ted formed the classic early lineup. The band's 1980 debut single, “California Über Alles,” mocked California governor Jerry Brown and became an early example of punk's political edge.

Their 1980 album Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables included “Holiday in Cambodia,” one of the best-known songs in American hardcore punk. Biafra left the band in 1986 after internal disputes. He later pursued spoken-word performances, independent music projects and the Alternative Tentacles label. The name “Jello Biafra” is a deliberately absurd combination of a food brand and the former African nation of Biafra, reflecting his satirical style.
