Which punk band released the 1979 album Metal Box, originally packaged in a metal film canister?

The story behind the answer

Public Image Ltd released the 1979 album Metal Box, originally packaged in a metal film canister.

Metal Box was Public Image Ltd’s second studio album and followed the group’s 1978 debut, First Issue. Its title refers to the unusual original packaging: three 12-inch records were housed in a round metal container resembling a film canister. Later editions were issued under the title Second Edition in a more conventional format.

The album’s music moved away from the short, direct structures associated with early punk. Jah Wobble’s prominent bass, Keith Levene’s abrasive guitar textures and John Lydon’s vocals created a spacious, experimental post-punk sound.

Wire, Magazine and The Pop Group are neighboring post-punk names that can cause confusion because they also released influential records around the same period. Metal Box, however, is specifically associated with Public Image Ltd, the band formed by former Sex Pistols singer John Lydon.
