Which punk band recorded the 1979 album London Calling?

The story behind the answer

The Clash recorded the 1979 album London Calling.

Released as the band's third studio album, London Calling marked a major expansion of The Clash's musical range. Alongside punk rock, its songs draw on reggae, ska, rockabilly, rock and roll, and R&B. The double album was released in the United Kingdom on 14 December 1979, with a United States release following in January 1980.

The title track became one of The Clash's best-known songs, while other widely recognized tracks include "Train in Vain," "Spanish Bombs," "Lost in the Supermarket," and "Rudie Can't Fail." The cover photograph, showing Paul Simonon smashing his bass guitar, became an iconic rock image.

The album is sometimes mistaken for Give 'Em Enough Rope, The Clash's previous studio album, or Combat Rock, their later 1982 release. London Calling is especially notable because it kept the band's political urgency while moving well beyond a narrow punk sound.
