Which punk band had the hit 'Should I Stay or Should I Go'?

The story behind the answer

The punk band that had the hit “Should I Stay or Should I Go” was The Clash.

The song was written in 1981 and released in 1982 on Combat Rock, The Clash’s fifth studio album. Although the songwriting credit belongs to the whole band, guitarist Mick Jones provided the lead vocal. Its direct, catchy chorus helped make it one of the group’s most recognizable songs.

The single initially achieved only moderate chart success, but it became a much bigger hit after appearing in a popular Levi’s jeans advertising campaign in the early 1990s. A 1991 re-release reached number one on the UK Singles Chart. That later success sometimes causes listeners to associate the song with the band’s commercial peak rather than its original 1982 release.

The Clash are also known for songs such as “London Calling,” “Rock the Casbah,” and “Should I Stay or Should I Go.” The band’s combination of punk energy with reggae, rockabilly, funk, and political songwriting earned them the nickname “the only band that matters.”
