Which punk band had the hit 'Ever Fallen in Love'?
Answer
Buzzcocks
Answer
Buzzcocks
The punk band behind the hit “Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve)” was Buzzcocks. Written by singer and guitarist Pete Shelley, the song was released as a single in 1978 and became one of the Manchester band’s best-known recordings.
The song was issued on September 8, 1978, with “Just Lust” on the B-side, and later appeared on the Buzzcocks’ second studio album, Love Bites. Its tightly wound guitars, brisk rhythm, and instantly memorable melody combine punk’s urgency with the hooks of classic pop. It reached No. 12 on the UK Singles Chart.
The title came from a question about falling for the wrong person. Shelley said the song was inspired partly by the 1962 musical film version of Les Misérables, particularly a line from the character Marius. He later explained that the lyrics also connected to his own relationship with Francis Cookson, with whom he lived for several years.
Listeners sometimes confuse the track with songs by The Undertones, The Damned, or The Clash because all were prominent British punk acts of the period. However, the song’s combination of romantic vulnerability and sharp pop craft is especially characteristic of the Buzzcocks, and Shelley’s authorship is firmly documented.
