The Washington, D.C., punk band known for the song “Waiting Room” is Fugazi.
“Waiting Room” became Fugazi’s signature track, blending post-hardcore intensity with funk, reggae, and a memorable bass-driven groove. Ian MacKaye wrote the song, drawing partly on his determination to make his new band last longer than his previous group, Embrace.
The song first appeared on Fugazi’s self-titled debut EP in 1988 and was later included on 13 Songs, the 1989 compilation that introduced many listeners to the band. Its famous studio version was recorded at Inner Ear Studios in Arlington, Virginia, with producer Ted Niceley.
A common mix-up is confusing Fugazi with Minor Threat, MacKaye’s earlier Washington, D.C., band. Minor Threat helped define hardcore punk, while Fugazi developed a more experimental post-hardcore sound after forming in 1986. “Waiting Room” was never issued as a standalone single, yet it became one of the most recognizable songs in American underground rock and has been widely covered and sampled.
