The Australian punk band known for the 1976 single “(I’m) Stranded” is The Saints.
Formed in Brisbane in 1973, The Saints built a fast, abrasive sound around vocalist Chris Bailey, guitarist Ed Kuepper, bassist Kym Bradshaw, and drummer Ivor Hay. They played at a time when punk had not yet become an established international movement, and local venues often rejected them.
The band released “(I’m) Stranded” independently on its Fatal Records label in September 1976. The single was recorded in Brisbane with engineer Mark Moffatt and initially pressed in an edition of about 500 copies. Its raw guitars, urgent rhythm, and sneering vocal delivery quickly attracted attention in the United Kingdom.
The song predates the first records by several major British punk bands, including The Damned, the Sex Pistols, and The Clash. The Saints were subsequently signed to EMI in the UK. A common mix-up is confusing them with other Australian punk or post-punk acts such as Radio Birdman; The Saints are the group directly associated with “(I’m) Stranded.”
