Which punk band featured the singer Joey Ramone?

The story behind the answer

Joey Ramone was the lead singer of the punk band Ramones. Born Jeffrey Ross Hyman in Queens, New York, he helped form the group in 1974 with Johnny Ramone and Dee Dee Ramone. The members adopted matching “Ramone” surnames even though they were not related.

Joey originally played drums, but he moved to lead vocals when Dee Dee found the demands of singing difficult. Tommy Ramone eventually became the drummer, completing the classic early lineup. Joey’s tall frame, distinctive voice and melodic delivery became central to the band’s identity.

The Ramones released their self-titled debut album in 1976, followed by influential records including Leave Home and Rocket to Russia. Their fast, concise songs helped define American punk, even though they never achieved major mainstream chart success. A common mix-up is confusing Joey Ramone with Johnny Ramone: Joey was the singer, while Johnny played guitar. The band continued until 1996, and Joey died of lymphoma in 2001.
