Which publisher first released The Great Gatsby in 1925?

The story behind the answer

Charles Scribner’s Sons first released The Great Gatsby in 1925.

The publisher issued F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel in New York on April 10, 1925. Fitzgerald had worked with Scribner’s editor Maxwell Perkins, who helped him revise the manuscript and shape the book for publication. The novel was Fitzgerald’s third book and followed This Side of Paradise and The Beautiful and Damned.

The first edition is also famous for its dust jacket, designed by the Spanish-born artist Francis Cugat. Its luminous eyes and red lips over a dark blue cityscape became known as “Celestial Eyes.” Fitzgerald saw the artwork before the book was finished and incorporated imagery inspired by it into the novel.

The book received strong critical notices but initially sold poorly. Fitzgerald died in 1940 believing his reputation had faded, yet later paperback distribution and renewed academic interest transformed The Great Gatsby into an American classic. Harper & Brothers, Viking Press, and Random House were important publishers, but they did not first publish this novel.
