Who played Nick Carraway in Baz Luhrmann's 2013 film The Great Gatsby?

The story behind the answer

Tobey Maguire played Nick Carraway in Baz Luhrmann's 2013 film The Great Gatsby.

Maguire's Nick is both a participant in the story and its narrator. In the film, Nick looks back on his brief period in New York during the summer of 1922, when he lived next door to Jay Gatsby and became entangled in Gatsby's attempt to reunite with Daisy Buchanan. This framing device places Nick in a sanitarium, where he begins writing about his experiences.

The film was directed and co-written by Baz Luhrmann and adapted from F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel. Leonardo DiCaprio played Gatsby, Carey Mulligan played Daisy, and Joel Edgerton played Tom Buchanan. Nick's narration gives the colorful, extravagant production a reflective perspective amid its parties, romances and tragedies.

Maguire had previously worked with DiCaprio, including on This Boy's Life. A common mix-up is to identify DiCaprio as Nick because Gatsby dominates the title and marketing; DiCaprio played Gatsby, while Maguire supplied the film's observing narrator.
