Which public school did Lewis Carroll attend before Oxford?
Answer
Rugby School
Answer
Rugby School
Lewis Carroll attended Rugby School before Oxford. His birth name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, and he entered the famous Warwickshire school in January 1846, aged 14.
Dodgson remained at Rugby until December 1849. He then matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford, in May 1850 and took up residence there in January 1851. Christ Church became the centre of his adult life: he studied, taught mathematics and lived there for decades.
Rugby was already one of England’s leading public schools, especially after the reforms associated with headmaster Thomas Arnold. Dodgson did well academically, particularly in mathematics, although he later recalled his school years with mixed feelings. A common mix-up is to confuse Rugby with Westminster School or another elite institution; Dodgson did attend Richmond School earlier, from 1844 to 1845, but Rugby was the school immediately preceding Oxford.
