Which pseudonymous detective series did J.K. Rowling begin with The Cuckoo’s Calling?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling began the Cormoran Strike series with The Cuckoo’s Calling.

Published in 2013 under the name Robert Galbraith, The Cuckoo’s Calling introduces Cormoran Strike, a private investigator and former Royal Military Police investigator. Strike examines the death of model Lula Landry, which authorities have treated as suicide.

Robin Ellacott becomes Strike’s temporary secretary and then an important investigative partner. Their professional relationship develops across the series, while each novel presents a separate major case. The books combine traditional detective plotting with continuing character storylines.

The series is sometimes called the Strike novels or the Cormoran Strike novels. Rowling’s identity as Galbraith was disclosed shortly after publication, but the books continue to use the pseudonym as part of their branding and fictional detective tradition.
