Antonoff began by creating the instrumental, then sent it to Swift, who wrote the lyrics on the spot. Alwyn’s production credit reflects his involvement in the Folklore sessions, where he was credited under the pseudonym William Bowery on several songs. The “august” credits identify him by his professional name.
The track’s layered sound combines dream pop, guitar pop, and soft rock elements. Strings, keyboards, synth textures, guitars, and reverb create the hazy atmosphere associated with the song’s summer-memory theme.
Aaron Dessner was also a central Folklore collaborator and producer, but he is not listed among the producers of “august.” That distinction is a common source of confusion because Dessner worked on several other songs from the album.
