Which prime minister requested official Dominion Day events in 1958?

The story behind the answer

John Diefenbaker requested official Dominion Day events in 1958. He asked Secretary of State Ellen Fairclough to organize a federal celebration, backed by a $14,000 budget.

Before this change, Dominion Day celebrations were usually local affairs, supplemented by events hosted by the governor general at Rideau Hall. The federal government had held larger celebrations for major anniversaries, but there was no regular, centrally organized national program.

Fairclough’s events helped establish a recurring Ottawa format featuring a trooping-the-colour ceremony on Parliament Hill, a mass band concert, and fireworks. She later broadened the program to include folk and ethnic performers, making the holiday more public, inclusive, and family-oriented.

A common mix-up is confusing Diefenbaker’s role with Fairclough’s. Diefenbaker initiated the request; Fairclough organized the events. The holiday itself was still officially called Dominion Day until its legal renaming as Canada Day in 1982.
