Which pope dedicated the Sistine Chapel in 1483?
Answer
Sixtus IV
Answer
Sixtus IV
Pope Sixtus IV dedicated the Sistine Chapel in 1483. The dedication took place after the chapel’s construction and first decorative campaign under his papacy.
The chapel was consecrated to the Assumption of the Virgin on 15 August 1483, the Christian feast of the Assumption. Its early frescoes were painted by leading Renaissance artists including Perugino, Botticelli, Ghirlandaio, and Cosimo Rosselli.
Sixtus IV is also the pope whose name gave the chapel its modern designation. He should not be confused with Julius II, who later commissioned Michelangelo’s ceiling, or Clement VII, who commissioned The Last Judgment.
