A common mistake is to confuse Tonga with neighboring Polynesian island countries such as Samoa or Tuvalu. Nukuʻalofa is specifically Tongan; the name is often written without the ʻokina as “Nukualofa” in English sources. The city has also endured major disruptions, including the destruction of much of its central business district during the 2006 riots and severe tsunami damage after the 2022 volcanic eruption.
