Which Pokémon was the first to appear in the Pokédex numbering system?

The story behind the answer

Bulbasaur is the first Pokémon in the Pokédex numbering system, listed as number 001.

It is one of the three starter Pokémon offered at the beginning of Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and their remakes. Bulbasaur is a dual Grass- and Poison-type Pokémon, and its design combines a small reptilian body with a plant bulb growing on its back.

The Pokédex number is not a ranking of strength, popularity, or evolutionary importance. It reflects the ordering used for the original Kanto Pokédex. Bulbasaur evolves into Ivysaur and then Venusaur, making it the first member of the first complete evolutionary family in the original Pokédex.
