Which Pokémon was chosen as the central icon of the original anime series?

The story behind the answer

Pikachu was chosen as the central icon of the original Pokémon anime series.

The early anime planning team wanted a character who could appeal broadly to boys, girls, and parents. Pikachu was selected instead of one of the three game starters—Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle—so the television protagonist would have a distinct partner.

In the games, players begin by choosing among the three Kanto starter Pokémon. Ash’s anime story deliberately works differently: Professor Oak gives him Pikachu, and Pikachu’s independence creates the foundation for their friendship. The yellow Electric-type Pokémon quickly became the recognizable face of the franchise.

Pikachu’s prominence later influenced Pokémon Yellow, an enhanced version of the first-generation games that places Pikachu beside the player. Pikachu is therefore both the anime’s signature character and one of the most important links between the games, television series, merchandise, and anniversary celebrations.
