Pikachu is the official mascot and most recognizable character of the Pokémon franchise. The Electric-type Pokémon is a small yellow creature with black-tipped ears, red cheek patches, and a lightning-bolt-shaped tail.
Pikachu was designed by Atsuko Nishida and Ken Sugimori for the original Pokémon games. Its popularity grew dramatically when it became Ash Ketchum’s partner in the animated series, beginning with the 1997 episode “Pokémon, I Choose You!” The anime gave Pikachu a prominent personality and made it the visual symbol of Pokémon worldwide.
Pikachu is not the first Pokédex entry—that distinction belongs to Bulbasaur—and it is not the strongest or rarest Pokémon in the games. Its importance comes from its mascot role, merchandise presence, anime prominence, and use in logos and promotional campaigns. Pikachu’s popularity also led to spin-off games, costumes, plush toys, and special in-game forms.
