Which Pokémon generation began with the games Pokémon Sun and Moon?

The story behind the answer

Pokémon Sun and Moon began Generation VII of the main Pokémon video-game series.

Game Freak developed the games for the Nintendo 3DS, and Nintendo and The Pokémon Company published them in 2016. They introduced the tropical Alola region, a setting inspired by Hawaii, and replaced the traditional Gym structure with island challenges and trials.

Sun and Moon added new species, Alolan forms of familiar Pokémon, Z-Moves, and the Ultra Beasts. Their starter Pokémon were Rowlet, Litten, and Popplio, while the cover Legendary Pokémon were Solgaleo and Lunala. The games also supported nine languages at launch.

The pair was released in Japan, North America, and Australia on November 18, 2016, with Europe following on November 23. They were promoted as part of Pokémon's 20th-anniversary celebrations. The games should not be confused with Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, which are enhanced versions released the following year.
