Which Pokémon games introduced the Galar region?

The story behind the answer

Pokémon Sword and Shield introduced the Galar region. The paired role-playing games launched worldwide for Nintendo Switch on November 15, 2019, beginning Pokémon's eighth generation of core games.

Galar is inspired by the United Kingdom, with landscapes and architecture influenced by British geography and history. The games follow a young Trainer competing in the Galar League's Gym Challenge, while characters such as Hop and Leon shape the story. Their signature mechanics include Dynamax and Gigantamax, which temporarily make Pokémon enormous during certain battles.

Sword and Shield were the first core Pokémon role-playing games designed for Nintendo's Switch platform. Their downloadable expansion pass was also a series first: The Isle of Armor arrived in June 2020, followed by The Crown Tundra in October 2020. They are sometimes confused with Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, which reached Switch earlier but are remakes and are not the eighth-generation core pair.
