Pikachu follows the player as the starter Pokémon in Pokémon Yellow.
Released in Japan in 1998, Pokémon Yellow was an enhanced version of the first-generation games designed to resemble the Pokémon anime. Instead of choosing Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle at Professor Oak’s laboratory, the player receives Pikachu.
Pikachu does not remain inside its Poké Ball in the overworld. It follows the player and displays reactions based on the player’s treatment, reflecting the anime’s portrayal of Ash’s companion. The rival receives an Eevee, creating a different opening from Red, Blue, and Green.
The game also includes Team Rocket characters Jessie and James and gives Pikachu a voice performed by Ikue Ōtani. Pokémon Yellow launched in Japan on September 12, 1998, before arriving in North America in October 1999.
