Which player won the women's singles badminton gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Carolina Marín won the women’s singles badminton gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The Spanish player defeated India’s P. V. Sindhu in the final, winning 19–21, 21–12, 21–15. The result made Marín the first European woman to win Olympic badminton singles gold.

Marín’s victory was especially notable because Asian players had dominated the event since badminton entered the Olympics in 1992. Her aggressive left-handed style and fast attacking play helped her become one of the sport’s leading figures.

The 2016 final is sometimes confused with the 2020 final, which was won by China’s Chen Yufei. Marín missed the Tokyo Games because of a serious knee injury.
